Concept: Bosses currently drop gems the first time they're killed. Which is good, since you usually need gems in that part of the game. The optional bosses drop gems AND runes. Which is not good. By the time I get to the point where I am able to kill a boss, I have no need for the gems. They're kind of useless. I've gotten a T5 weapon, and have better things to use my inventory for.
Therefore:
optional bosses should drop either unique items that don't drop when killed, or just gold coins and medallions. I'm tempted to say uniques, since it kind of sucks when you take down the Mag and your ally steals the rune.
Example item (drops from Akama) Akama's stealth-armor: passive: + 5 armor, +10 agility. Active: mirror image, 1 illusion, 20% damage dealt, 300% received.

I could add in a item that you turn in for an undroppable epic item, kind of like the tier pieces in WoW. That way the player could choose the item for his specific hero instead of dropping specific items for certain heroes.

Hm. So a boss would also drop an 'emblem of triumph' which you could trade in for either class specific or just good items? I like.

Seems like a great idea.
Perhaps it could be based on a "Spellbook"? Where when you attempt to use the item, it opens a menu (based on the Spellbook ablilty) for you to select various items?

Hm. That would be kind of a cool idea, but a little bit complicated. An easier thing would be to make a new variable, that would show up somewhere, of number of emblems, with a trade in in town. Alternatively, you could let EVERYONE on the team get a free item for every boss taken down, by some other system.

Or rather, an NPC back at base who pops up a menu when you talk to him of loot options.

Not if u were in the Southern base, and just killed mag. Most heroes would take 1+ minutes to get back.

There's not much point of having someone walk all the way back for 1min when you could just have the item on the spot.
Right?
